ADDITIONAL
TRAINING INFORMATION
When
& Where To Train at Home:
Choose a quiet area to work with your dog so that YOU
can be the center of attention. Don't train your dog
directly after feeding. Two short training sessions
are better than one long one.
In addition to setting aside specific times to train
your dog, you will want to start making him/her obey
you using the training techniques you are learning in
class. Try to use these techniques whenever you want
your dog to behave with or without a training collar
and leash. Never give your dog a formal command that
you can not enforce! That's what training is all
about. All level 1 is done on lead to ensure you have
the capability to reinforce your commands.
Dogs
learn by repetition. In order to be successful you have
to practice with your dog 5 days a week - 15 to 20 minutes
each session. It is practice at home that will bring
success. Class time is to teach YOU what and how to
teach your dog at home, as well as provide lots of distraction
so your dog learns to listen/obey you no matter what
is happening around him/her.
Taking your dog for a walk is not the same thing
as doing your training homework!
The instructors will cover this during the 1st
class.
Safety Rules:
Many
dogs react unfavorably to alcohol and some medications.
Therefore, no one is permitted to train in class if
there is evidence of using alcohol. Smoking is prohibited
when on the training floor during sessions. However,
there will be a short break during each class to air
& water your dog. You can smoke in the smoking lounge
or outside during this time.
Books & Advice:
Well meaning friends can give you the wrong advice about
training. Because we are working with you and your dog,
please use the techniques & procedures you have been
shown in class. If you have any difficulty, please call
us right away.
Attendance in Class:
To get the most from our program, class attendance is
VERY IMPORTANT. If you must miss your regular class,
please try to attend one of the other classes at your
level during that week. If this is impossible, please
call and for a nominal fee of $15.00 we will do a make
up class with you. Bitches in season/heat are allowed
into class.
Starting Time:
All
classes begin promptly. We would appreciate you arriving
approximately 10 minutes prior to each class so you
can warm your dog up before the formal class begins.
Our classes run from 1 ½ to 2 hours.
Exercise & Feeding:
Be sure to exercise/air your dog before class. If an
accident happens, you will be given the tools to clean
it up. Do not train your dog until at least 1 hour after
feeding. This applies to your classes as well. You may
give him a treat/snack before training so he/she is
not working on an empty stomach.
Clothing:
As our classes are held indoors and outdoors (weather
permitting) please dress accordingly.
Who Should Train:
We allow up to 2 adults per dog to participate in the
classes. Each person can work half the class; however,
we will want you both on the training floor when instructions
are being given. Only in special circumstances do we
allow students to attempt training who are under the
age of 15 years of age. If you have any questions on
this please call us. This is due to the fact that children
and even some teenagers do not have the self discipline,
initiative, and in some cases, the strength to train
a dog.
Equipment:
You
will require a properly sized training collar and a
6 foot nylon or leather leash. Chain leashes are not
allowed nor are flexi's. If you are not sure of the
proper training collar your dog will require please
note that we have an excellent variety of training collars
and leashes (at a reasonable price) for you to choose
from with our guidance. Your equipment will be checked
at the beginning of each class to ensure it is on the
dog correctly and is not faulty or too small or large
for the dog.
Spectators:
Visitors are welcome but must remain quiet and seated
during class. Children must be well behaved and capable
of sitting quietly on the seating provided. They will
not be allowed to play outside or remain in cars, as
we cannot provide the necessary supervision to ensure
they don't get injured or become a nuisance to fellow
students or to our guests in our boarding facility.
Children must be accompanied by an adult when going
to the washrooms. When classes are held outdoors, children
will have to sit quietly on the grass. We always welcome
spectators and we hope you will tell your friends and
relatives about our classes.
Cancellations Due To Weather:
In case of inclement weather that will affect driving
conditions, you will be notified 2 hours prior to class
if we feel your classes should be canceled.
Parkland Kennels Refund Policy:
A FULL REFUND will be issued if you call and cancel
your class 5 days prior to the start of your class.
If you cancel after that time you will be refunded half
the tuition. If you attend the 1st class and decide
for whatever reason you do not wish to continue you
will be refunded half the tuition.
You must advise us of this decision immediately after
the first class!
If you attend 2 classes or more NO REFUND will be issued.
However, you are given the option of signing up for
another training session at no cost (within 6 months
of the original classes). Our classes are held Spring,
Summer, Fall, & Winter.
